  4. I can hear you now... "How do I install these??"

  6. Don't panic.  I'm going to walk you through everything as if I was there 
  7. with you.  I got sick and tired of getting new stuff for Max, just to find
  8. the docs were written so technoid that, unless YOU were the author of the
  9. utility, you couldn't figure out how to use it.  Worse yet, SOME utilities
  10. came with little of no docs at all.  I just want to make it easy on you to
  11. install this stuff.  For once, just "plug and go".  I did all the hard work
  12. of pulling my hair out, swearing, staying up late, and spending BIG dough
  13. calling all over to get this stuff assembled into one coehesive file.

  17. All I -really- ask is that you, after getting it all installed and working,
  18. drop me a netmail message saying "It's in, and it works.  Thanks!".

  21. Go down this file, STEP BY STEP!  You'll have working additional protocols 
  22. by the time you get to the end.  (Really!) :-)

  26. First off, you need HS/LINK, MPT, BIMODEM, HYDRACOM and GSZ or DSZ.  These 
  27. need to be the registered versions, or the files will end up in your \MAX 
  28. directory.  HS/Link & HYDRACOM will work right without registration.
  29. If you need these files, please look locally first.  If you can't find them
  30. near you, feel free to file request them from me.  
  31.  
  32. Freq the magic name "FILES" from Bloom County.  You can then look up the 
  33. current version and file name for each protocol.  Freq's are available at
  34. all times except during Zone Mail Hour.  Here in the Detroit area, ZMH is
  35. 4-5am Fall to Spring (Daylight savings time) and 5-6am, Spring to Fall.
  36. (We are in the Eastern Standard Time Zone.)
  37. To make things somewhat easier, here's some names to try for each file.
  38. As of this writing, you *should* get the correct, current version using
  39. these.

  41. DSZ*.*   (*.* is in case there's a new version since this writing...)
  42. GSZ*.*
  43. MPT*.*
  44. HS112.ZIP (I don't recommend a HS*.*, as you may get other, unwanted files)
  45. HYDRA*.*

  47. NOTE:  I *used* to have a file that contained JUST the files needed, without
  48. docs or extra stuff that came with them.  I decided to NOT offer that 
  49. anymore.  Get the entire package for each, and READ THE DOCS!

  51. Please, don't scream and whine if you don't get what you want using these
  52. names.  Again, I suggest you Freq my FILES list first, or try to find them
  53. on a BBS near you.

  56. A Word About Honesty...

  59. If you're going to use these protocols, please, pay the guys for their work.  
  60. They're making YOUR BBS better... they deserve it!  There -are- "breaks" and
  61. "cracks" for these out there, but you're stealing if you use them.
  62. Pure and simple.  These protocols are the result of hard work.  That work
  63. deserves compensation.  Again, please register these protocols.

  66. Next, get a coffee/soda, light a ciggy, and print this out so you
  67. have it IN YOUR HAND while installing these files.

  73. Rename your PROTOCOL.CTL to PROTOCOL.OLD
  74.  
  75. Copy these files into your \MAX directory:

  78. DSZ.COM (or DSZ.EXE or GSZ.EXE)
  79. MPT.EXE
  80. HYDRACOM.EXE
  81. RDSZ.BAT *
  82. RHSL.BAT *
  83. PROTOCOL.CTL *

  87. First, check your MAX.CTL file.  If, at the very bottom, it does NOT have
  88. "Include Protocol.Ctl", ADD THIS LINE NOW.  Save your MAX.CTL.
  89.  
  90. Read the PROTOCOL.CTL file now.  Check for special notes, in particular,
  91. if you're NOT running DesqView, you'll need to remove a couple switches from
  92. the HS/Link command line, and if you're running 4DOS, you need to change all
  93. occurances of "command.com" to "4dos.com".
  94.  
  95. If all checks out ok, re-silt Maximus.  ("SILT MAX")  
  96.  
  97. Now we need to turn OFF the internal Maximus Zmodem protocol, as we're adding
  98. our own.  Find your .BAT file that actually runs Max.  (Mine is RUNMAX.BAT)
  99. Add "-XZ" to the end of the command line to run max.
  100. (EX: max %1 %2 %3 %4 %5 -XZ)
  101. Don't change YOUR command line to match mine, as it might be different.
  102. ONLY add the "-XZ" to yours.

  104. A word about GSZ/DSZ...

  107. I like GSZ for it's graphical output during file transfers.  It tells you 
  108. TONS of information, which can be a help if there's trouble with a user's 
  109. session.  All the references in the .BAT and .CTL files point to DSZ.
  110. If you, like me, prefer to use GSZ, you have two choices.  Change all the
  111. references from DSZ to GSZ, or do what I did... rename GSZ.EXE to DSZ.EXE.
  112. It works fine, so don't worry.

  114. Oh, did I mention that we're done?  :-)  You now should have the following
  115. WORKING protocols on your BBS:

  117. Xmodem (DSZ)
  118. Ymodem (DSZ) <-- for those users that don't have Zmodem or v.42/v.32 modem.
  119. Ymodem-G (DSZ) <-- You MUST have an error-correcting modem for this to work!
  120. MobyTurbo (DSZ)
  121. Zmodem (DSZ)
  122. MPt/Puma <- Great interface, good throughput.
  123. HS/Link  <- Bi-Directional!  User can up/download at THE SAME TIME!
  124. Hydra    <- the new bi-directional from JoHo.  (Yes, another one...)

  126. Should you decide that you don't want to use some of these, just REM them 
  127. out of the CTL file with the "%" character.  After all, do you *really* need
  128. to offer *two* bi-directional protocols?  How about *two* Xmodems?
  129. I'm not a "trendy" type guy, so I only offer those that I know people are
  130. actually using in my area.  (Y, Yg, HSL, MPt, and Moby/Z)

  132. I've purposely left out SuperZmodem (You -really- need to play games while 
  133. your user is uploading??) and Tmodem, and ABCDEFGModem, and all the other
  134. goofy protocols that are out there.  Yes, I tested them, and after the dust
  135. settled, these were the best (and most often used) at what they do.

  137. If you want to make SURE these are there (and if you followed my instructions
  138. -to the letter-, they are), go to the Max "Offline Reader" menu in your BBS.
  139. Now select "P)rotocol"...  See 'em?  If not, you missed something and should
  140. retrace your steps through this file.

  142. A word about why you want to install this stuff anyways...

  145. I have a SupraFAXModem v.32bis (14400), and I use X00 v1.24 as my fossil,
  146. locked at 38400.  In my testing (with another sysop using a PPI 14400) we 
  147. attained 3000+cps with bursts up to 7000(!)cps on an uncompressed file.
  148. (an ANSI animation file)  With compressed files, you can expect to see
  149. average rates of 1500/1700cps.  If you don't have a 16550 UART on your
  150. serial interface, you MAY NOT GET THIS HIGH OF THROUGHPUT!
  151.  
  152. While these protocols are of value to any sysop, to get the real "soil your
  153. pants" performance, you need to have at least v.32bis modem, and a serial 
  154. card that has a 16550AFN UART.  I don't care what anyone says, you don't need 
  155. to lock your port at 57k to get the most out of your system.  Many doors will 
  156. puke if you attempt to lock higher than 38.4k anyhow.

  158. Remember!  You must have an error-correcting modem (v.32bis or v.42bis)
  159. to get the most out of many of these protocols.

  170. Seeing as how you -cannot- remove the Maximus internal Xmodem (or the
  171. outdated Sealink/Telink protocols), you -may- want to turn the DSZ/GSZ
  172. Xmodem into Xmodem OverThruster, to make it a little special.
  173. See the GSZ or DSZ docs on how to do that.  (I didn't bother with it...)

  175. Please!  If you offer this file on your BBS, do me a favor.  DON'T rename it,
  176. don't rearchive it, don't mess with it.  (Do what you want on the copy
  177. *you* use though...)  I've downloaded some other peoples "great new" file
  178. just to discover that it's actually MY work, redone.  If you want to see
  179. something added, tell me about it, ok?  I don't claim any rights to this 
  180. stuff, except the work to gather the info, and the time spent testing them
  181. all to make sure they work correctly.  What I *don't* like is people 
  182. removing *my* docs, and my thankyous.  Fair enough?  Ok.  <g>

  187. I'd like to thank the sysops who sent me the bits and pieces of this which
  188. started all my frustrations installing these externals.  Without them, I
  189. never could have assembled this file.  (Max sysops are the most helpful
  190. group of people you could ever want to deal with!)  If YOU have a working
  191. protocol setup that you'd like to see included, PLEASE, send it to me.
  192. I'll need your Protocol.CTL and most likely a copy of the actual protocol.

  198. switches, and just generally letting me lean on him when Max gets me
  199. confused.  Without him, I'd still be wondering how to set up FrontDoor,
  200. Max, and Squish.  He's a God-like being in my book!  :-)  Gary's system,

  203. ...and Steve Quarrella.  It was HIS constant pestering about installing this
  204. stuff that bugged me enough to get it all together.  It was either install
  205. these, or kill Steve.  Steve spent literally -hours- up and downloading,
  206. using each protocol, to assure it all worked.  Steve is The Bloom County 
  207. BBS's biggest supporter, (next to Gary) even though he has his own system to
  208. deal with, and never let me down when I needed him to babysit the BBS when I
  209. was on tour.  Steve's moved to Irving, Texas (yeehaa!), so you can pay him a 
  210. visit at FidoNet address 1:124/9005.

  213. and I really appreciate it.

  215. Special thanks to Scott Dudley.  I searched for a YEAR for what software I
  216. was going to use when I moved my BBS from an Apple IIgs platform to a MS/DOS
  217. box.  Maximus won hands-down!  Scott...  don't let us guys bug you too much.
